What's new at Helmsway.

A hand-curated, plain-prose log of recent Helmsway updates — what shipped, why it shipped, and what it changed for the founders running on it. For longer-form thinking and field notes, see the blog.

    Run

The morning brief now leads with the numbers that moved.

You asked for a shorter, sharper Monday read — we obliged. The brief now opens with the three metrics that actually changed since yesterday (retention, MRR, support backlog), the rest folded underneath. The supporting sections are still there when you want them: an experiment ledger, the draft reply queue, and the next batch of queued product work. We just stopped burying the headline.

    Ops

Failed Stripe payments now recover themselves.

Helmsway now watches the payment queue overnight. When a charge fails, it drafts the recovery email — short, on-brand, never pushy — and queues it for your morning review instead of paging you at 2am. We tested it across twelve beta apps over the last month. Net recovered revenue: ~$840 across the cohort, with founders approving the draft in under thirty seconds on average.

    Build

The build interview now pauses for your checkpoints.

The guided interview used to run end-to-end and surface the result at the end. That made the build feel like a black box — fine for a weekend hack, wrong for a product you'll operate for years. Now the interview pauses at every meaningful decision (the people you serve, what success looks like, what would feel cruel if it were missing) and writes the brief back to you in plain language. You confirm, we keep going.

    Iterate

Support replies are now drafted — not auto-sent.

Customer-visible changes need your nod. Helmsway now drafts replies to inbound support, holds them in a queue you can scan on Monday morning, and only sends after you approve. Nothing customer-facing ships silently. That's been the rule from day one; this is the surface that finally makes it concrete.

    Launch

A launch checklist you can actually read.

The day-one ship used to land as a Slack-shaped blob of stuff that happened. It's now a checklist grouped by what shipped, what was deliberately kept manual, and what's queued for the next sprint. The point isn't more paperwork. It's so you can answer "what did you do this week?" in under a minute without scrolling a thread.

    Launch

    First private-beta cohort is live.

Twenty-eight solo founders. Forty-three apps in motion. A morning brief that lands by 7am local time. Thank you for trusting us with the operations loop. We will keep the cadence quiet, the defaults honest, and the Friday digest short.
